FMX riders are logging so much hang-time now that it is something that shouldn't be missed but if you ride, you probably already know this. If you don't have a clue and you're wanting to experience the best of freestyle motocross (FMX), be sure to frequent this web page as it'll be current with the Red Bull X-Fighters latest happenings.
Despite a heavy fall at the X-Games just weeks before the Red Bull X-Fighters season finale in London, Robbie Maddison still pushed 2009 overall champion Nate Adams all the way in the British capital. In an interview, the Australian record holder and runner-up in the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour 2009 talks bike problems, disappointment and goals for next year.
Robbie, congratulations on second place in the overall
standings, but I imagine you couldn't have been happy with your run in the
semi-final. It looked like you had several problems with the bike, can
you tell us what happened?
I definitely had some bad luck. The
throttle played up & we broke a throttle housing in practice. We put a
new throttle housing on, but it was actually bent and it was locking
the throttle up. So we replaced that, and then I went out there and had a
problem with my flip lever. I had some trouble putting it down and
couldn't get the clutch and stalled the motor, but that was just the
start of my problems! After stalling the motor I came off the run-in to
one of the doubles on the double-double. From then on I missed the ramp
and knew my run was done. It's hard to swallow, especially in the
semi-final.
How disappointed were you that your chances of
claiming the overall championship win ended in such a way against one of
your biggest rivals and best friends?
I was definitely disappointed because I was so close. Nate and I are neighbors, but we're such tough
competitors; we're good friends, but at the same time we're always
keeping an eye on each other and he one-upped me & he had an ace up his
sleeve. He's been putting in hard work at the end of the season, and
I've had a really rough ride the last couple of weeks, so it's just the
way it goes.
Are there any lessons you can take from this experience, or is it too early for that?
I think I learned something from this year: I really need to not make
myself so busy next year jumping Tower Bridge and all these other
things I've done in between the freestyle has really upset my training,
so I'll really try to focus next year. I try to find a positive in every
situation.
Third place in 2008, second place in 2009 and first place in 2010?
Yeah, it's moving forward slowly! I would have liked to go from third
to first, but hey, at least I'll get a one, two and a three on the
mantel piece eventually.
Looking ahead to next year, what are your expectations for the 2010 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour?
Next years expectations for the Red Bull X-Fighters Tour are that I'm
going to go back and really dedicate myself to the Red Bull X-Fighters
championship. I'm going to learn some new tricks in the foam pit and
keep it quiet and really work on my fitness because at the start of the
year I was really fit, but then with the injuries I haven't been able to
train and my fitness had slid and morale has dropped. I really want to
come in next year and keep the morale high all year and just do what Mat
Rebeaud did two years and win every stop, it makes it way easier!
