Highlights From the Zimmerman Brothers CollectionPreviously owned by actor Lee MarvinEight speed gearboxSold on Bill of Sale Not known to many people is the fact several Hollywood actors enjoyed motorcycles and especially motocross, as evidenced by this bike from the Zimmerman Brothers Collection’s special group of bikes dubbed the “Hollywood Bikes.” These bikes were previously owned by movie stars, and this bike proves that Lee Marvin was no exception. Marvin was a motorcycle enthusiast who used to race the southern California desert and local scramble events alongside other actors such as Keenan Wynn, and brothers Bud and Dave Ekins. Actors like Wynn and Steve McQueen famously attended, and Marvin infamously raised hell. In fact, Dave Ekins credited Marvin for being partially responsible for the Catalina Grand Prix’s demise in 1958. “So, what happened? There are several reasons as to why they terminated this race. One of the reasons is that money commitment to cover the costs of the programs didn’t show up. After all, can’t have a race without a program," Ekins said. "Another was actor Lee Marvin trying to incite a mutiny from the fantail of the homebound steamer. Marvin never needed a microphone even when shouting against the wind and it was all in jest anyway. But the Captain took Lee seriously enough to strap on a sidearm and stand on the bridge. The ship was escorted to the dock by the Harbor Police. Marvin had some explaining to do. Probably the most damaging was when Waikiki Bar owner Mel Porter closed up Saturday night and was mugged on his way home by several scum bags. Mel didn’t take kindly to this treatment and the Chamber of Commerce decided no more races. They chose the wrong person, Mel was the Mayor of Avalon.” This 1971 Husqvarna 360C was found at Marvin’s Baja, Mexico, residence and brought back to the United States. The young Marvin was thrown out of dozens of schools for incorrigibility, and after dropping out of high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the beginning of World War II. In the battle of Saipan in June 1944, he was wounded by Japanese fire, which severed his sciatic nerve. He received a medical discharge and took menial work as a plumber's apprentice in Woodstock, New York. While repairing a toilet at the local community theater, he was asked to replace an ailing actor in a rehearsal. He was immediately stricken with a love for the spotlight.
