Here's More About It:
The 1981 Maico 490 Mega 2 is arguably the best twin shock air cooled motocross bike ever produced. It is perhaps the most sought after racer in all of vintage motocross. The example in this listing was rebuilt/restored from top to bottom using the best NOS (new old stock) parts available. This bike has only "break in time" on it, it starts easily with everything working as you would expect. This 490 could be proudly displayed in any motorcycle show or vintage motocross event. The following highlights explain the work performed mechanically as well as cosmetically to this bike: Refinished frame, swingarm and lower forks were sprayed in single stage enamel as it came from the factory. NOS Akront rims, new Bucchanan spokes and nipples, new rims strips, rim locks, tubes and NOS Metzeler tires. The rims feature a Wheelsmith style spoke lacing pattern. The forks retain new seals, springs, bushings and dust seals. (The hardchrome is original, the slider area is clean with minor pitting between the triple clamps) The handle bars aren't new, however they are a period correct item and are in perfect condition. The correct Magura controls are ALL new as well as the cables. The grips are ultra rare OEM barrel style grips. The fenders and side panels are correct M. Roberts plastic and are original items from the bike since new. All of the hardware and fasteners are either original or NOS items. The seat cover is a reproduction item manufactured utilizing the same grain of leather found when it was new, the fit and finish are excellent. The air boot, air filter, intake manifold are new, the Bing carburetor features all new jets, slide etc. All bearings in the wheels, swingarm and steering stem have been replaced, the brake shoes are new. The Fox dual rate Gasser shocks were rebuilt by Thor Lawson and are a great period correct upgrade. The engine was rebuilt top to bottom including the crank. Every seal, bearing and washer were replaced as well as the piston, rings etc. The pipe is an original part, refinished, no dents or scuffs, the same goes for the silencer. The chain and both sprockets are new as well. This 1981 Maico 490 is priced fairly considering the cost of rare New Old Stock (NOS) parts, outside services coupled with the time and expertise required to restore a bike to this level.
