Dirt Bike Helmet Information For Motocross, Off-Road or FMX Use

Picture of Various Motorcycle Helmets Designed for Off-Road Use

If you're shopping for dirt bike helmets, whether it's an adults helmet, a kids helmet or even a ladies helmet for one of the fast and flying chicks that this sport is turning out, it's critical that a few things are considered beforehand.

First of all, forget about a used helmet as this is not only "Nasty" to think of wearing something that someone has already sweated and spit up real good, as well as this being a bad idea because of the way a helmet naturally conforms to a riders head over time and would result in a poorly fitting helmet which could injure a rider in a crash, as well as the possibilities that go with a poor fitting helmet such as obstructing a riders view and allowing an excess of wind and noise into the helmet causing potential hearing loss.

A good, high quality motorcycle helmet and neck brace should definitely be the top priorities in anyone's list of dirt bike safety gear.

To make your search for a quality dirt bike helmet a little easier, we've teamed up with MotoSport and are able to bring you directly to a selection of some of the industries best helmets such as Arai, as well as other offerings such as One Industries, Fox, HJC and Thor among others from adult sizes to youth riders, including helmets for the girls out there lapping some of us at the motocross tracks or the ones checking out in the woods leaving y'all floundering trying to keep up.

How To Ensure A Helmet Fits Properly

Before you get too far along, you may want to check out these tips for ensuring a helmet is going to or does fit properly.

If you're going to be ordering a new helmet, now would be a good time to get a tape measure which can be found at a Wal-Mart or other general purpose store as these work well for obtaining a measurement of a riders head and combined with the helmet sizing charts below, this can bring someone very close to getting the right size helmet on the first try.

Measuring a riders head for a proper helmet size is simple...
  • Using a cloth type measuring tape as described above, for the best fittment, you want to measure the circumference around the riders head about ½ to 1 inch above their eyebrows. Really... It's that simple.
  • Once the measurement has been obtained and is within 1/8th of an inch, you may want to review the tables below which are specific to the dirt bike helmet being considered to obtain the best fit.
If you're looking at a helmet which is not specified in the table below, just try to do your best to generalize and find a suitable size that corresponds with the measurement taken, as all of these charts are approximates at best but don't worry about that as the helmet manufacturers have done quite an impressive job of tailoring dirt bike helmets to fit a wide and diverse range of head shapes & sizes so it shouldn't be difficult to obtain a good fitting helmet with a simple measurement and review of the more popular helmet manufacturers helmet sizing charts below.
