Motocross as it's now called has long been presumed by many to have originated in France, although this is not accurate as motocross was a sport that was originally derived from observed trials which were held in northern England and which riders were subjected to terrain that tested the rider's, abilities to cover the course prescribed, as well as this was a true test of a motorcycle's performance.
