Vintage Pictures of Early Motocross

When delving into the history of motocross, it's nice to review vintage pictures from the era when brands such as Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki often shared the starting gates with popular dirt bikes such as Maico's (pronounced MY-co), Bultaco's, and Hodaka's to name a few.

In this era, motocross bikes were generally air cooled and usually equipped with steel handlebars bolted to suspension which would bottom over terrain that would now be soaked up with ease, and to further emphasize... These bikes were generally only equipped with drum brakes as the only means of slowing these machines down.

These vintage pictures of motocross's early days truly do serve as a testament to riders such as Marty Tripes and Gary Semics among many others whom have still remained active in the sport of Motocross in one form or another many years later.

Remember: The legends of motocross that many have only read about, were piloting these machines which were severely lacking in the suspension department compared to todays standards with the only means of being slowed being that of drum brakes, and that was while while sporting open face helmets with snap on visors which were secured with duct tape along with a Jofa mask or "Face Fender" which was the first thing to go after a good face plant, yet were one of the best options for protecting a rider's face from flying rocks and roost before full face helmets were heavily adopted.

That along with Carrera goggles which were nothing like goggles of today, then add some true leather pants and a cotton jersey to weigh a rider down real good and make it difficult to move about on the bike, or to feel any sense of ventilation and you've got a pretty good idea of what these vintage pictures of motocross's yesteryear are illustrating and the punishment that these riders were subjected to in 90+ degree temperatures.

Vintage Color Pics From Gatorback Cycle Park in Alachua, Florida,
Circa 1973

The Following are a few vintage pics taken at Gatorback Cycle Park Circa 1973.
Some notable facts about this era are that the starting line was in the parking area about where the vendors are generally setup during the popular Mini O's held at the facility annually. From the start line, the track went north toward the highway then turned right towards the east followed by another right back toward the south, then the motocross track crested the hill by the tower. Another notable fact about this era is that the MX track did not go in front of the tower until 1976.
